Wroclaw and Silesian Borderlands

A captivating cycling holiday through the heart of historic Silesia, a region rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty. This exceptional bike tour weaves along the Polish–Czech border, an area once at the crossroads of Polish, Czech, and German influences. Today, it offers a truly immersive journey through a landscape shaped by centuries of shared history.

Following the route of the former Silesian border, this cycling tour reveals the legacy of a region once divided by a territorial dispute between Frederick the Great of Prussia and Empress Maria Theresa of Austria in the 18th century. As a result, the border winds unpredictably through the countryside, cutting through villages in ways that reflect a fascinating past.

Since Poland and the Czech Republic joined the Schengen Zone, this region has become an even more attractive destination for cycling holidays in Central Europe. Many historic routes have reopened, allowing cyclists to explore borderland attractions with ease and freedom. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a leisurely rider, the network of reopened roads and scenic trails offers an ideal escape.

A highlight of this Silesian cycle tour is the homage to Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff, one of Germany’s greatest Romantic poets. Born at Lubowice Palace near Racibórz, Eichendorff later returned to Silesia, the land he so often evoked in his poetry. This route leads you past several historical landmarks, palaces, and memorials connected to Eichendorff’s life and times, blending cultural exploration with outdoor adventure.

Whether you’re drawn by history, literature, or stunning natural vistas, this cycling holiday in Silesia offers a truly enriching experience across a lesser-known but incredibly rewarding part of Europe.

Itinerary

Your cycling holiday begins with arrival in Wrocław, the vibrant capital of the Silesian region. You’ll stay in a comfortable, centrally located hotel—perfect for exploring the historic city before your bike tour begins.

We begin the day with a scenic coach journey through Lower Silesia, travelling approximately three hours towards the Czech border. Our destination is the charming mountain village of Zieleniec, nestled at 860 metres above sea level. Once the highest village in Prussia, Zieleniec offers breathtaking views of the Table Mountains, a unique geological feature of the region.

Before we begin cycling, we visit a remarkable raised bog ecosystem, located on the European watershed dividing the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. From here, we enjoy a rewarding downhill cycle ride towards Duszniki-Zdrój, one of the oldest and most renowned spa towns in the Sudetes, known for its healing mineral springs and historic paper mill.

Continuing along quiet forest lanes, we follow the crystal-clear Bystrzyca stream through tranquil countryside to the picturesque spa town of Polanica-Zdrój, a favourite retreat for wellness seekers and nature lovers alike.

Our final stretch is a gentle descent into the valley of the Nysa Kłodzka River, where we reach our comfortable hotel in the historic town of Kłodzko. With its medieval architecture and scenic setting, Kłodzko offers a perfect end to a day of discovery and cycling adventure.

We begin the day in Kłodzko, a cultural gem of Lower Silesia renowned for its rich history and stunning location. The town is home to several notable landmarks, most famously the 18th-century fortress and the Gothic stone bridge, often referred to as the “younger sister” of Prague’s Charles Bridge due to its architectural resemblance and historic charm.

Our cycling tour continues through idyllic countryside, passing sleepy villages and descending into the deep, winding valley of the Nysa Kłodzka River. We soon arrive in Bardo, one of Silesia’s most important pilgrimage destinations. Here we visit the revered Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary, a site of spiritual and historical significance.

Pedalling onwards, we follow winding cycle paths lined with fruit trees and quiet lanes, eventually reaching the majestic Kamieniec Ząbkowicki Castle. This extraordinary palace—an ambitious design by famed Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel—stands as a unique architectural marvel amidst the surrounding hills.

Our journey then follows the Nysa Kłodzka towards the historic town of Paczków, often dubbed the “Polish Carcassonne” due to its remarkably well-preserved 14th-century city walls. A walk through its medieval old town offers a glimpse into Silesia’s rich past and defensive heritage.

From here, we leave the Polish side of Silesia behind and cross the Polish–Czech border, arriving in the quaint town of Javorník, where we check into our accommodation and prepare for the next chapter of our cross-border cycling holiday.

Our day begins with a visit to Jánský Vrch Castle in Javorník, a striking hilltop fortress originally built in the 13th century. Transformed into a Baroque palace in later centuries, the castle became an influential hub for Silesian music and culture, attracting composers and artists from across the region.

After exploring the castle and its elegant interiors, we continue our cycling tour along the Czech–Polish border, passing through picturesque Bohemian villages nestled in the rolling landscape. At Vidnava, we re-enter Poland and ride on to the charming town of Głuchołazy, where we check into a hotel set within a beautifully landscaped park.

Głuchołazy is a town steeped in history and character. Its Renaissance and Baroque townhouses surround a scenic market square, where a Linden tree planted in 1648 commemorates the end of the Thirty Years’ War—a living symbol of peace and resilience.

This stretch of your cycling holiday in Silesia and Bohemia blends cultural landmarks, tranquil nature, and borderland heritage, offering a truly memorable experience for lovers of history and the outdoors.

As we continue our cycling tour through the Sudetes, you’ll notice numerous stone crosses and roadside shrines—remnants of ancient pilgrimage routes that once crisscrossed the region. These silent markers, still common throughout Silesia and Bohemia, add a reflective charm to this tranquil stretch of countryside.

We follow quiet rural roads via Prudnik, making our way to the Czech village of Osoblaha. This little-known borderland settlement inspired German author Otfried Preußler, who named the beloved character Robber Hotzenplotz after the German name of Osoblaha. While here, we’ll visit the well-preserved Jewish cemetery, a poignant and important reminder of the region’s diverse cultural and religious heritage.

Our journey then takes a unique turn as we board a narrow-gauge railway, a traditional mode of transport still operating in this part of the Czech Republic. The scenic train ride offers a relaxing change of pace and a glimpse into local life before we continue cycling along the Opava River valley towards our destination.

We finish the day in the charming town of Krnov, where we check into our hotel. Known for its recently restored Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture, Krnov’s elegant buildings and peaceful streets provide the perfect backdrop to unwind after another rich and rewarding day on your cross-border cycling holiday.

We begin today’s ride heading south from Krnov, climbing gently towards a scenic hilltop crowned by a pilgrimage church and a striking neo-Gothic lookout tower. The panoramic views from the top provide a rewarding pause before we descend into the rolling landscapes of Moravia, rejoining the tranquil Opava River valley.

The highlight of this leg of the journey is our arrival in Opava, the historic capital of Czech Silesia. Once a major cultural and political centre, Opava still boasts impressive architecture, lively squares, and a rich Silesian heritage.

We’ll spend the night in a centrally located hotel, right in the heart of the old town, offering easy access to Opava’s many attractions and a perfect base to soak up the atmosphere of this fascinating city.

This stage of your cycling holiday through Czech and Polish Silesia combines natural beauty with cultural depth, taking you from sacred hilltops to one of the region’s most important historic towns.

On the final day of our cycling holiday, we bid farewell to the Sudeten region and head northwards through peaceful countryside to visit the elegant Krawarz Palace (Kraware), a beautifully preserved 17th-century residence. This stately home was long associated with the aristocratic von Eichendorff family, whose legacy is closely tied to the cultural history of Silesia.

Crossing the border once more, we reach Krzanowice, where our cycling adventure comes to a close. From here, we begin the return transfer to Wrocław or Kraków, depending on your travel arrangements or connection to other cycling tours in Poland.

This final leg offers a reflective and scenic end to a journey rich in history, architecture, and the shared cultural heritage of Czech and Polish Silesia—an unforgettable cross-border cycling experience.
