Munich’s Surrounding Lakes
Lake Ammer, Lake Starnbergand and Lake Kochel are some of the well-known locations you will come across on this tour. In fact, these lakes are good enough for the likes of celebrities due to their beauty and local beer gardens. German TV series “Der Bulle von Tölz” was also created in this area. The history and beauty speak for themselves here, enjoy the sparkling lakes and create your own stories to tell.
Itinerary
After making your way to the capital of Bavaria have a quick tour briefing and bike fitting and then head out into the city and see some of the famous sights, the English Garden, the Town hall on Marienplatz and Hofbräuhaus.
Time to get on the saddle and start cycling! Peddle through Forstenrieder Park, this was once a hunting ground of 2100 hectares, it’s a true favourite for nature lovers. Head along the Königlich-Bayerischen past Gauting, where you will pass over a slightly hillier area on route to Lake Ammer. Take a break from your morning’s cycling with a large beer or a “Maß” in German, this can be enjoyed in a traditional beer garden. Afterward comes another treat in form of a downhill path, until you take a boat from Herrsching to Dießen, one of which will be your stay for the night.
Head to Weilheim in “Pfaffenwinkel“ along the River Ammer. This place has its name because of the multiple monasteries and 159 churches in the area. Next head through green meadows and luscious green forests until you get to the shores of Lake Starnberger. Your stay for the night will be in either Bernried or Ambach.
Today will be a day dedicated to Lake Starnberger. Travel round the entire width of the lake, which is most likely the most famous in Bavaria. On route you will see multiple lakeside resorts, holiday residents of the rich and famous, shady beer gardens and gorgeous swimming areas.
More lakes to come today! Start by passing the peaceful “Osterseen” lakes. These are made up with 19 small lakes and are a welcoming area to swim. After this travel through authentic Bavarian villages and by Lake Riegsee, where it is not much further to Murnau which is home to a gorgeous town square. Pass by the “Murnauer Moos” and famous stud farm “Schwaiganger” where Lake Kochel will appear in sight. We recommend a visit to the Franz Marc Museum!
Today provides a shorter cycle, giving plenty of time to enjoy the area. After covering just a bit of distance you will arrive in the leafy beer garden of the Benediktbeuern monastery, you will get here via the Kocheler Mood. This area achieved its wealth through two historical trading routes, which can still be felt today through the beautifully decorated houses.
Enjoy a short morning in Bad Tölz before heading back to the Bavarian capital. You will go along the Isar cycle path through Geretsried and Wolfratshausen and onto Grünwald. There will be some small hills before you get back to Munich. Enjoy an afternoon of visiting attractions.
