Vennbahn Cycle Route

In the summer of 2013, the Vennbahn was officially inaugurated as Europe’s longest and most picturesque continuous cross-border cycle path, stretching 125 kilometres along disused railway tracks. This remarkable route, with an average gradient of less than 2%, traverses three countries: starting in Aachen, Germany, near the Dutch border, and extending through East Belgium to Troisvierges in Luxembourg.

The Vennbahn’s name pays homage to the unique High Fens nature reserve it passes through. This scenic route, once an essential railway link, has been transformed into a haven for cyclists, offering both a journey through diverse landscapes and a glimpse into its storied past. The railway’s historical significance is highlighted along the path with informative panels and historic photographs that celebrate the Vennbahn’s heritage.

Cyclists can enjoy a smooth and enjoyable ride through varied terrains, including lush woodlands, tranquil rivers, and charming towns. The route offers not only stunning natural beauty but also a rich tapestry of cultural and historical insights. As you cycle along the Vennbahn, you’ll encounter preserved sections of the old railway infrastructure, including restored stations and vintage railway artefacts, adding a nostalgic touch to your adventure.

Whether you’re an avid cyclist or a casual rider, the Vennbahn provides a unique opportunity to explore a region steeped in history while enjoying the serenity of its picturesque landscapes.

Itinerary

Travel, by your means, to Maastricht in the Limburg province, the farthest possible corner of the southern Netherlands, or Gravenvoeren, Belgium.

Maastricht is easily accessible by public transport. It’s a 2-hour train ride from Amsterdam and a 1-hour ride from Eindhoven. For those of you who are driving, there is parking available at the Hotel.

You will be welcomed with coffee/tea and “vlaai”, a local fruit tart.

A short ride will take you from Maastricht to the Belgian border. Past S-Gravenvoeren and Hombourg, you cycle to Raeren, where you can find a pottery museum, housed in the grand settings of a castle.

Continue, and ride to Eupen, the capital of the East Cantons. Enjoy an easy end to the day, as the last 7 kilometres of today’s route are in the ‘downhill’ direction of Lake Eupen!

Enjoy a rare treat today, as almost all of today’s route is closed to motorised vehicles. You will gradually climb to a height of 660 m above the NAP level, enjoying the natural beauty of the High Fens.

Once you pass Kalterherberg, the route follows the ‘Vennbahn’ cycling path. It’s an easy ride past Sourbrodt marshalling yard to Waimes, and then past Montenau artisanal ham smokery to Sankt Vith.

Continuing on the ‘Vennbahn’ cycling path, on the way to Luxembourg, be sure to keep your eyes open for the castle ruins of Burg Reuland. Shortly after, you will cross the border into Luxembourg and reach Troisvierges.

At this point, you can choose either to catch a slow train to Clervaux or cycle a splendid route with some stiff climbs and delightful descents!

Set off for the tripoint, the geographical point where Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany meet, which you will find near the town of Ouren. From there, follow the valley of the River Our North, passing Schönberg (which translates to lovely mountain).

True to the name, this is a lovely route! From Our Valley, the route climbs to 500m, but your efforts will be rewarded with guaranteed stunning views for the last stretch to Bütgenbach.

Take it easy today! You will cycle easily over the Vennbahn towards Aachen. Take a break in one of the lovely historical cities of Monschau or Kornelimünster. The last 30 km to Aachen are going downhill, so you will have some energy left to admire the beautiful inner city of Aachen.

On your final cycling day, head back from Aachen to Maastricht. The route in Holland that you will follow is the long-distance cycling route LF 13. Enjoy the hills and beautiful panoramas of scenic southern Limburg.

Departure from Maastricht. Alternatively, you can spend extra nights in the city or the surrounding area.
