This sporty cycling holiday from Donaueschingen to Passau follows the Danube along its entire course through Germany, offering a rewarding journey for riders looking to combine distance with discovery. Over the course of the tour, you’ll experience a rich variety of landscapes and cultural highlights, making it an ideal choice for those seeking an active and immersive cycling holiday in southern Germany.

Starting near the river’s source in Donaueschingen, you’ll ride as the Danube gradually transforms from a modest stream into one of Europe’s great rivers. Along the way, the route leads you through historic cities such as Ulm, Ingolstadt, and Regensburg, each offering its own architectural character and vibrant atmosphere. You’ll also encounter notable landmarks including the Benedictine monastery at Beuron, the impressive fortress city of Ingolstadt, and the striking Danube Gorge near Weltenburg, where steep cliffs and narrow passages create one of the most scenic sections of the river.

This cycling holiday balances nature and urban experiences, guiding you through peaceful countryside, dramatic river valleys, and charming Bavarian villages. Your bike becomes the perfect way to explore at a relaxed pace, passing cultural monuments, riverside paths, and inviting local eateries. Itinerary

“Brigach und Breg bringen die Donau zuweg” is a well-known local saying, meaning that the Brigach and Breg rivers together give rise to the Danube. Historically, the Romans regarded the spring in the parkland of Fürstenberg Castle as the river’s true source. The castle itself, built in an elegant Belle Époque style, stands as an impressive reminder of the former prominence of the Fürstenberg family. If you have arranged bicycle hire, your reserved bikes will be ready and waiting for you at the hotel.

This stage leads you through the Baar region, a gently undulating landscape characterised by open fields and quiet rural scenery. In Immendingen, you can visit a remarkable natural phenomenon – the Danube Sinkhole, where the river disappears underground for much of the year. At this point, instead of continuing its journey towards the Black Sea, part of the Danube’s water is diverted through subterranean channels to the Aachtopf spring, eventually flowing into Lake Constance and the Rhine.

Beyond Tuttlingen, the scenery becomes more dramatic as the valley narrows and the river cuts through limestone formations. You’ll soon arrive in Beuron, home to its renowned Benedictine Monastery, set within the striking surroundings of the Upper Danube Nature Park.

Today’s ride follows the Danube through a landscape shaped over centuries, where the river has carved its way through a striking limestone valley. Towering chalk cliffs, rising more than 100 metres in places, line the route, often crowned by castles or atmospheric ruins that add to the sense of history along the way.

Passing through Sigmaringen, you’ll be greeted by the impressive Hohenzollern Castle, dramatically positioned above the river and one of the highlights of this section. From here, you continue towards Obermarchtal, cycling along part of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, known for its ornate churches, monasteries, and rich cultural heritage.

You continue cycling along the Danube until you reach Ehingen, before following the valley of the ancient Danube, a landscape shaped by prehistoric river courses and gentle, rolling terrain. In Blaubeuren, you can visit the mystical Blautopf, a powerful karst spring located close to the former monastery. According to local legend, the beautiful Lau—a mythical mermaid—dwells within its deep blue waters, adding a touch of folklore to this already atmospheric site.

As you approach Ulm, the towering spire of Ulm Minster comes into view from a distance, dominating the skyline. Around the cathedral, you’ll find a lively shopping district with a mix of modern stores and historic streets. The nearby Fishermen’s Quarter, with its narrow lanes, canals, and half-timbered houses, still retains a distinctly medieval character, offering a charming contrast to the city’s more contemporary areas.

This stage follows the Danube Cycle Route towards Donauwörth, passing through a peaceful rural landscape shaped by the river. The villages along the way are often set slightly back from the riverbank, typically perched on higher ground to protect them from seasonal flooding. These small settlements remain largely unspoilt, offering a quiet, traditional atmosphere.

For those wishing to pause, there are several well-maintained villages along the route where you can take a break, enjoy a refreshment, or simply soak up the calm surroundings. As you approach Donauwörth, the landscape becomes more historically significant. Here, an important medieval trade route once crossed the Danube, contributing greatly to the town’s development and prosperity.

In Donauwörth itself, the elegant townhouses lining the streets serve as a reminder of this prosperous past. Their well-preserved façades reflect the town’s former importance as a trading hub, where river and road routes intersected and commerce flourished.

Today’s stage allows you to cover the distance swiftly as you approach the foothills of the Franconian Alb, which bring welcome variety to the route with their gently undulating terrain. This section of the cycling tour is particularly pleasant, combining easy riding with increasingly scenic landscapes and views of the surrounding countryside.

It is well worth making a stop in Neuburg an der Donau, where the charming old town invites exploration. Highlights include the impressive Court Church and the historic town theatre, both reflecting the town’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.

Continuing on to Ingolstadt, you’ll discover a city with a strong medieval character, where well-preserved fortifications and historic streets sit alongside its modern identity. Ingolstadt is also internationally known as the home of Audi, and motor enthusiasts may wish to visit the Audi Museum Mobile to explore the brand’s history. Alternatively, you can simply enjoy wandering through the atmospheric old town, with its squares, cafés, and striking Gothic architecture.

This stage of the tour follows the Danube mainly through its broad floodplains, with the river accompanying you closely for much of the way. The flat, open landscape makes for relaxed cycling, as you pass through a peaceful natural environment shaped by centuries of river dynamics.

Near Bad Gögging, you enter a region steeped in Roman history, where remnants of an ancient cultural landscape still reflect the area’s importance in antiquity. Further along the route, you arrive at Weltenburg, home to the famous Benedictine monastery, beautifully situated above the river. From here, the Danube Gorge reveals itself in all its grandeur, with dramatic limestone cliffs rising steeply on either side of the narrow waterway.

Continuing downstream, the route takes you along both banks of the Danube before reaching Regensburg, one of the best-preserved large medieval cities in Germany. Its historic old town, with its impressive cathedral, stone bridge, and wealth of well-preserved buildings, has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its outstanding cultural and architectural significance.

The more athletic climb up to the Walhalla Memorial, inaugurated by King Ludwig I in 1842, is well worth the effort. Perched high above the Danube, it offers sweeping views over the river valley and surrounding countryside, making it a memorable highlight of the day.

From there, your journey continues along the Danube as it flows through a wide, open plain, meandering in broad river bends across the landscape. You then cycle through the fertile Gäuboden region, passing through Straubing, a lively town with a long history and attractive old centre.

The route eventually leads you to Deggendorf, often referred to as the gateway to the Bavarian Forest National Park. This welcoming town sits at the transition between the river plains and the rising forested hills beyond. In the evening, a stroll through Deggendorf’s charming historic centre is highly recommended, with its pleasant squares, traditional architecture, and relaxed atmosphere providing a fitting end to the day’s ride.

After the more demanding stages of previous days, today’s route can be enjoyed at a more relaxed pace. Cycling via Vilshofen, you soon arrive in Passau, famously known as the “City of Three Rivers”, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz meet.

One of the best ways to appreciate this unique setting is from the water, with a boat trip offering striking views of the confluence of the three rivers and the surrounding landscape. As the day winds down, a leisurely stroll through Passau’s atmospheric historic centre is the perfect way to end your cycling holiday, with its elegant Baroque architecture, narrow streets and riverside promenades.

For a final highlight, the imposing Veste Oberhaus fortress, perched high above the city, is well worth a visit. It rewards the climb with panoramic views over Passau and the meeting of the rivers below, providing a memorable finale to your journey.
