Itinerary
Take a leisurely train ride to Oranienburg or one of the other starting points, located just outside Berlin. Welcome to the picturesque Ruppiner Land, a region that once inspired Theodor Fontane. Perhaps it was the charm of Oranienburg Palace, which has graced the city since 1651 and now stands as the oldest baroque palace in Brandenburg, inviting visitors to explore its history.
Or maybe it was the vast forests, winding canals, and crystal-clear lakes that created a unique atmosphere so close to the city. With Berlin’s vibrant energy only a short S-Bahn ride away, this area offers the perfect blend of culture, nature, and relaxation.
Cycle more today to experience even more tomorrow, or make today a day of discovery – the choice is yours! Either way, your adventure begins the same: just a few meters from your hotel, you’ll spot the first signpost for the Berlin-Copenhagen cycle route. Pedal along the lush Oder-Havel Canal, whose reed-lined banks and the calls of reed warblers create an enchanting backdrop, especially as you depart Oranienburg and head into the next stretch of your journey.
Soon, the striking white towers of the Lehnitz lock come into view. Built nearly 100 years ago, this is the busiest lock on the Oder-Havel waterway. From there, you’ll glide effortlessly through the flat landscape on well-maintained cycle paths. Be sure to take a break at the local history museum in Liebenwalde, housed in what was once a city prison. Explore the old cells and discover fascinating stories about the region’s shipping history along its extensive canal system.
Your journey through the Mecklenburg Lake District begins at the “Großer Stechlin,” a crystal-clear lake made famous in literature by Theodor Fontane. Just minutes away by bike lies the charming town of Fürstenberg/Havel, Germany’s only water town. Here, you’ll be greeted by the striking yellow neo-Byzantine-style town church. This region, once dubbed Fontane’s “little paradise,” sets the tone for what lies ahead as you cycle toward Neustrelitz. Along the way, you’ll encounter numerous small lakes with secluded shores and hidden bathing spots, offering cyclists the perfect chance to rest and take in the serene surroundings.
But don’t linger too long in these tranquil lake settings—Neustrelitz, a former royal residence city, awaits in the afternoon. Nestled in a picturesque water landscape, Neustrelitz offers rich history and culture, with highlights including its stunning castle park, the unique star-shaped market square, and the historic city centre. Here, you’ll gain fascinating insights into the history of the Grand Duchy of Strelitz as you explore this charming town.
Your adventure through the Mecklenburg Lake District begins at “Großer Stechlin,” a pristine, crystal-clear lake immortalised by Theodor Fontane in his literature. Just a short bike ride away, you’ll find the picturesque town of Fürstenberg/Havel, Germany’s only water town, with its eye-catching yellow neo-Byzantine town church. This area, once referred to as Fontane’s “little paradise,” offers a glimpse of what’s to come as you head toward Neustrelitz. Along your route, you’ll pass countless small lakes, each with secluded shores and hidden bathing spots, providing perfect rest stops for cyclists to soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
However, don’t spend too much time in the lakeside serenity, as the former royal city of Neustrelitz awaits you later in the day. Surrounded by a scenic water landscape, this historic town is rich in cultural heritage, boasting a grand castle park, a striking star-shaped market square, and a well-preserved old town. As you explore Neustrelitz, you’ll delve into the fascinating history of the Grand Duchy of Strelitz, making this stop a true highlight of your cycling journey.
Leaving the charming town of Waren/Müritz behind, cyclists head north, drawing closer to their next goal—the Baltic Sea coast. The route takes you through the scenic foothills of the Mecklenburg Lake District and the tranquil wooded landscapes of nature parks like Nossentiner Heide. Soon, you’ll arrive in the picturesque town of Krakow am See, where the beautiful lakeside setting, complete with small bathing bays, and the quaint old town are sure to captivate. To find the town centre, simply follow the spire of the brick town church. Be sure to visit the town’s fascinating book printing museum, located nearby.
In the afternoon, a relaxed ride brings you to Güstrow, a typical small town in Mecklenburg known as the “Barlach Town.” Here, you can explore the legacy of its namesake, Ernst Barlach, and seek out his world-famous sculpture, The Floating One. For an evening treat, visit the Barlach-Stuben restaurant, located right next to the artist’s former residence, where you can enjoy a delightful meal and reflect on the day’s journey.
As you cycle along the Nebel River and then follow the Bützow-Güstrow Canal, you’ll make your way through the picturesque Warnow Valley toward the Baltic Sea. The journey starts with some rolling hills, guiding you through a wide, open landscape. Be sure to pause in the charming town of Bützow at the Gänsebrunnen fountain, and enjoy a coffee at a Marktplatz café. Here, you might reflect on the day’s experiences: Güstrow or Bützow? Which of these lovely sister towns captured your heart more?
Continuing your ride, you’ll pass the old water mill in Schwaan, now an art museum showcasing the legacy of the former artists’ colony. From here, well-paved paths lead you to the Hanseatic city of Rostock. In this Baltic Sea metropolis, you can briefly trade natural beauty for cultural splendour. Explore historic monuments such as the imposing Marienkirche and the grand old merchants’ houses of the northern Old Town, which tell stories of Rostock’s magnificent past. Conclude your visit with a stroll along the bustling city harbour on the banks of the Warnow River, a perfect finale for your cycling tour.
The Rostock ferry port is just a short ride along the east bank of the Warnow River. After a quick 12 kilometres on the bike and a two-hour ferry journey, you’ll arrive in the charming Danish town of Gedser, located on the southern tip of Falster Island. Unlike the rolling hills of previous days, this stage offers a completely flat cycling path, perfect for a leisurely ride. If you’re lucky, a favourable south wind will help you cruise effortlessly along the straight paths toward the small town of Nykøbing.
Nykøbing, the water-encircled capital of Falster, greets you with plenty of charm. Pedal past picturesque half-timbered houses, take in the view from the 43-meter-high water tower or unwind with a movie at the “Scala Bio,” a modern cinema situated on the town’s beach boulevard. It’s the perfect place to relax and soak in the unique atmosphere of this delightful Danish island.
Off to the island of Møn! As you leave Nykøbing, you’ll pass the city’s zoo and beautiful botanical gardens, both worth a visit before heading toward the coast. With stunning sea views, you’ll ride along the Berlin-Copenhagen cycle path, passing serene sand and pebble beaches through easy, flat terrain until you reach the historic merchant town of Stubbekøbing. Here, you can explore Denmark’s largest motorcycle museum, home to Northern Europe’s biggest collection of vintage motorcycles.
At this point, you have two options: take the bicycle ferry to the island of Bogø, or continue cycling overland to Kalvehave on the island of Møn. Your destination for today is the quaint town of Stege. However, if time allows, consider a detour to Møns Klint, the island’s iconic white chalk cliffs. These impressive rock formations rise to 128 meters, making them the highest cliffs in Denmark and offering breathtaking views of the surrounding sea.
Crossing the bridge from Møn to Zealand, you’ll be greeted by a landscape dotted with charming country houses and grand manor estates, all nestled amidst vast farmlands. Your next leg covers approximately 55 kilometres to Fakse Ladeplads or 75 kilometres to Rødvig, where you can marvel at the area’s fascinating cliffs. An overnight stay in Rødvig marks the end of this stage, but if you’re planning to stay in Køge, you can opt to take a shortcut by train from either town (on your own).
For those seeking more of a challenge, continue cycling the entire 107-kilometre route to Køge. Whether you choose to take it easy or push your limits, this scenic stretch offers a perfect blend of coastal beauty and countryside charm.
As you approach the bustling Køge Bay area, the landscape gradually shifts from rural charm to urban vibrancy, signalling your nearing arrival in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. But don’t worry—vast fields and expansive beaches remain a constant companion on this stage of your journey.
Along the way, you’ll increasingly encounter the masts of sailboats, both small and large, adding a nautical touch to the scenery. The picturesque marinas, such as Hundige Havn, capture the essence of Danish coastal life and lead to delightful bathing spots where locals and visitors alike enjoy the summer sun. For those seeking a cultural experience, the Arken Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj is a must-visit, showcasing exceptional art and architecture.
Cycling with a view of Amager Fælled, a historic pasture and nature reserve once used as an execution site until 1845, you’ll cross into Copenhagen. Welcome to the city!
Once in Copenhagen, take time to explore the vibrant city centre. Stroll through lively Nyhavn, visit the historic Tivoli Gardens amusement park, marvel at the splendid Rosenborg Castle, and wander down Strøget, Copenhagen’s bustling pedestrian street. Each of these iconic attractions offers a unique glimpse into the city’s rich culture and history.
