The Main Cycle Route Classic
This exciting route starts in Bamberg, which lies in “Bierfranken” aka the Franconia of beers. Follow the river as it flows through the Franconian wine country and penetrates luscious green forests in the Spessart region just to the back off Würzburg. Whilst following the cycle path you will really see why it’s one of the most beautiful cycle paths in Germany. There are castles, fortresses, and intricately decorated churches, as well as spots to stop for a tipple in beer gardens and atmospheric wine taverns. There is also an abundance of history to learn.
Itinerary
Time to say hello to Bamberg, a medieval town which has been a world heritage site since 1993. Enjoy visiting the cathedral, which was sanctified in 1237 and belongs to the principal German imperial cathedrals. Heinrich 2nd lays to rest here.
Time to get on the bike and head through the valley, following the Main. You’ll pleasantly pedal past wine villages and orchards dotted by the river. As the day progresses you will pass through Haßfurt and eventually reach Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia, which has a beautiful Holy Trinity church.
Visit the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten, it was built in the 15th century and there is the famous floating Madonna in the Rosary by Riemenschneider. Experience the Maindreieck wine region in Volkach which lies in the centre. The Main curves round the valley in the direct of Kintzingen, which is well-known for having the oldest wine cellar in Germany.
The river and the Main cycle track change drastically as you head towards the urban Franconian town of Würzburg. You must pay a visit the Baroque Castle and the Würzburger Residenz Palace, which is a World Heritage Site and is an impressive view over the city. Also unmissable are the Old Bridge and the traditional vineyards that you can find in the city. Continue to Zellingen and Karlstadt on pleasant paths.
Yet another day of visiting gorgeous old towns and vibrant scenery! Breeze along the flat tracks as you pass the Three-River-Town of Gemünden and Lohr which boats historical buildings. Along the way you can appreciate the chilled atmosphere in the dotted towns. Enjoy an evening drink in Marktheidenfeld, which finds itself in between Main and the hills of Spessart.
Pay a visit to Wertheim Castle, whose high position provides a gorgeous, wide view of the town. Follow the next river turn and you will start to see the infamous Stadtprozelten which has the Henneburg castle and has one of the most beautiful castle ruins. Your stop for the night will be Miltenberg which is famous for its beautiful old marketplace, and for the Gasthaus zum Riesen Inn, which has hosted emporer Barbarossa!
Ride alongside ships on the River Main and reach your first stop of Miltenberg which boats vineyards and local, traditional wine pumps. Passing through awe-inspiring scenery head to the today’s destination of Aschaffenburg which is knows and the “Spessart Metropolis”. In the distance you can see the four towers of Johannisburg castle.
Have one last breakfast and then either set off home or extend your trip.
