Main Cycle Route: Bamberg to Aschaffenburg
Your cycling holiday along the River Main begins in Bamberg, the heart of Beer Franconia. The river winds its way in sweeping curves through the Franconian Wine Region. After passing Würzburg, it meanders slowly through the dark green forests of the Spessart. Along the way, you’ll encounter castles, forts, and artistically decorated churches that speak of the region’s rich history.
Enjoy the unique charm of the towns along the River Main, including the former imperial town of Bamberg, the historic residential town of Würzburg, and the labyrinthine old town of Wertheim. Be sure to schedule plenty of breaks during your holiday to take advantage of the many secluded beer gardens and rustic wine taverns located right along the cycle path. Don’t miss out on sampling the region’s culinary delights, such as Blaue Zipfel (local sausage) or Franconian Schäufele (pork).
2027 launch offer: £50 per person off all 2027 departure dates!
Itinerary
Time to say hello to Bamberg, a medieval town which has been a world heritage site since 1993. Enjoy visiting the cathedral, which was sanctified in 1237 and belongs to the principal German imperial cathedrals. Heinrich 2nd lies to rest here.
Time to get on the bike and head through the valley, following the Main. You’ll pleasantly pedal past wine villages and orchards dotted by the river. As the day progresses, you will pass through Haßfurt and eventually reach Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia, which has a beautiful Holy Trinity church.
Visit the pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten, which was built in the 15th century, and there is the famous floating Madonna in the Rosary by Riemenschneider. Experience the Maindreieck wine region in Volkach, which lies in the centre. The Main curves around the valley in the direction of Kintzingen, which is well-known for having the oldest wine cellar in Germany.
The river and the Main cycle track change drastically as you head towards the urban Franconian town of Würzburg. You must pay a visit to the Baroque Castle and the Würzburger Residenz Palace, which is a World Heritage Site and has an impressive view over the city. Also unmissable are the Old Bridge and the traditional vineyards that you can find in the city. Continue to Zellingen and Karlstadt on pleasant paths.
Yet another day of visiting gorgeous old towns and vibrant scenery! Breeze along the flat tracks as you pass the Three-River-Town of Gemünden and Lohr, which boasts historical buildings. Along the way, you can appreciate the chilled atmosphere in the dotted towns. Enjoy an evening drink in Marktheidenfeld, which finds itself between the Main and the hills of Spessart.
Pay a visit to Wertheim Castle, whose high position provides a gorgeous, wide view of the town. Follow the next river turn and you will start to see the infamous Stadtprozelten, which has the Henneburg castle and one of the most beautiful castle ruins. Your stop for the night will be Miltenberg, which is famous for its beautiful old marketplace and for the Gasthaus zum Riesen Inn, which has hosted Emperor Barbarossa!
Ride alongside ships on the River Main and reach your first stop, Miltenberg, which boasts vineyards and local, traditional wine pumps. Passing through an awe-inspiring scenery, head to today’s destination of Aschaffenburg, which is known as the “Spessart Metropolis”. In the distance, you can see the four towers of Johannisburg Castle.
Departure from Aschaffenburg or spend extra nights in the city or the surrounding region.
