St Moritz to Innsbruck

A painter inspired by Impressionism could spend weeks capturing the beauty of this cycling holiday. The Engadin offers a wealth of unforgettable impressions, from the picturesque villages of Zernez, Susch and Lavin to the wide valleys of Upper Engadin and the magnificent forests of the Swiss National Park. Every turn brings another spectacular panorama, making this a truly inspiring setting to explore by bike.

Then, almost unexpectedly, the scenery changes as you cross into Tyrol. Here, a warm and welcoming atmosphere invites you to enjoy the region’s famous conviviality. Your cycling holiday finishes in Innsbruck, a fascinating cultural and Olympic city with a distinctive cityscape and its own unique character.

By the end of the journey, even the artist may have put down their brush and embraced the pleasures of good food, good company and the joy of discovering these remarkable landscapes by bike.

Itinerary

Direct journey to St. Moritz, or travel to Innsbruck followed by a bus transfer to St. Moritz.

Enjoy the fascinating surroundings of St. Moritz and take a scenic bike tour around the lakes, cycling towards the source of the River Inn.

Today, you will cycle via Samedan, where you can admire the Old Tower, then continue to La Punt, home to the early Gothic Church of San Andrea with its beautiful frescoes. From there, the route takes you through Zuoz, where you can see the impressive window paintings in the Church of San Luzi, before continuing on to Zernez.

You will cycle through the picturesque valley of the Upper Engadin, surrounded by stunning Alpine scenery. Zernez is known as the gateway to the Swiss National Park and is home to the National Park House.

First, you will cycle to Lavin, which has retained the charm and character of a traditional mountain village. You will then continue to the picturesque village of Guarda, whose name means “Look!” and refers to the splendid views from the village.

Today’s destination is Scuol, home to the Bogn Engiadina adventure water park and the impressive Tarasp Castle, a majestic landmark and symbol of the Engadin.

From Scuol, you will cycle via Martina to the Swiss-Austrian border. From there, you will continue through Pfunds and Tösens to Ried/Prutz. Following the River Inn, you will reach the impressive Finstermünster Gorge.

Along the way, the historic village centres of Stuben and Pfunds in Tyrol are well worth exploring.

On day six, you will cycle through the “Oberes Gericht”, travelling from Ried via Prutz to Landeck. Here, you can explore Landeck Castle and its museum, the ruins of Schrofenstein, the historic Gerber Bridge, and sites associated with the Tyrolean struggles for freedom.

From Landeck, you will continue past Zams Abbey and through the protected Mils floodplain before reaching Imst, known as the “City of Fountains” for its numerous fountains, churches and chapels. The impressive Rosengarten Gorge is also well worth a visit.

Small villages line the Inn Cycle Path as you make your way towards Innsbruck. The cultural highlight of today’s route is Stams Abbey, a Cistercian monastery renowned for its beautiful collegiate church and ornate rose window grilles.

Numerous historic churches and castle ruins can be seen on the hills above the Inn Valley. Cycling along the impressive Martinswand mountain face, you will eventually reach Innsbruck, with its beautifully preserved old town. Highlights include the Golden Roof, City Tower, Imperial Palace, Hofgarten Park and the colourful Helblinghaus.

Departure from Innsbruck or spend extra nights in the city or the surrounding region.
