Slovenia Loop: Bled – Trieste – Bled

This cycling tour showcases some of Slovenia’s most spectacular scenery, combined with a brief journey along Italy’s Adriatic coast. Starting in Bled, on the doorstep of Triglav National Park, you’ll cycle through lush river valleys and gently rolling hills before reaching the lively capital, Ljubljana.

The impressive Postojna Cave, Slovenia’s largest show cave, is sure to leave an impression, as are the intriguing karst landscapes surrounding it. Crossing into Italy, you’ll discover Trieste, renowned for its elegant cafés, Mediterranean atmosphere and laid-back dolce vita. In the border town of Gorizia, a fascinating mix of cultures awaits.

From here, the dazzling turquoise waters of the Soča River lead you through breathtaking natural scenery and back towards the mountains. As you make your way back to Bled, there are two perfect opportunities to cool off with a refreshing swim – in Lake Bohinj, Lake Bled, or, if you can’t choose, both!

Itinerary

Bled is a true gem, situated on the doorstep of Triglav National Park. This charming lakeside town is centred around a beautiful glacial lake, overlooked by a dramatic hilltop castle and home to its iconic island. Together, these features create one of Slovenia’s most picturesque and instantly recognisable scenes.

Take a final glimpse of Bled Castle and the shimmering lake before setting off along the crystal-clear Sava Bohinjka River. Quiet cycling routes take you through verdant countryside, with birdsong and picturesque villages accompanying you as you make your way into the broader Sava Valley and onwards to Ljubljana, where historic charm meets the energy of modern city life.

Once you arrive, soak up the relaxed atmosphere and enjoy a delicious meal at one of the riverside restaurants.

Start the morning by taking a few final photographs of Ljubljana’s highlights before leaving the city behind and following the Ljubljanica River. It won’t be long before you find yourself surrounded by nature once again, although the scenery takes on a different character. The dramatic mountains of the previous days give way to gently rolling countryside dotted with traditional villages, where life seems to move at a more leisurely pace.

Your day ends in Postojna, home to an unforgettable highlight – Slovenia’s largest show cave. This spectacular underground world provides a fitting finale to the day.

Today brings another exciting change of scenery as you cross the border into Italy and cycle towards the coast. Before reaching the sea, you’ll ride through Slovenia’s remarkable Karst region, a fascinating landscape unlike anywhere else and, in places, strikingly similar to the Scottish Highlands.

A long descent then leads you towards the coast, with the final kilometres following a former railway line and offering spectacular views across the Gulf of Trieste. The route takes you straight into the heart of Trieste, where you can embrace the Italian dolce vita in the evening and indulge in some of the country’s renowned cuisine.

Cycle through picturesque villages across the Karst plateau, perched high above the deep-blue waters of the Adriatic. Along the route, you’ll pass the remarkable Grotta Gigante before crossing the border back into Slovenia.

From here, the journey continues through a charming wine-producing region towards Gorizia. This fascinating border town blends Italian flair with Central European sophistication, creating a lively cultural hub with a distinctive character of its own.

After just a few kilometres, cross the Soča and join a cycle path that follows a former railway line, passing beneath the impressive Solkan Bridge. The river’s striking blue-green waters remain your constant companion as you make your way through the scenic Soča Valley.

In Kanal ob Soči, the river winds directly through the village, creating a wonderful spot to pause and capture a few photographs. From here, the route continues through verdant countryside, gradually heading towards Tolmin. As the mountains begin to rise around you once again, they become an increasingly dramatic feature of the landscape as you make your way back towards the Julian Alps.

Begin the morning by following the Soča River to the picturesque town of Most na Soči. From here, board the train for a journey through Slovenia’s longest tunnel to Bohinjska Bistrica.

A short detour to Lake Bohinj is highly recommended, where the tranquil waters sit amid a breathtaking Alpine landscape straight from a postcard. Afterwards, follow the crystal-clear Sava Bohinjka along a scenic cycle path through the valley, surrounded by majestic mountains, before returning to Bled.
