Itinerary
You’ll enjoy a delightful evening in the Alsatian capital, known for its network of canals and distinctive, charming atmosphere.
A well-crafted cycle path leads you through the town to the banks of the Rhine. From here, you’ll ride with ease along the river through the gentle Rhine valley. At Drusenheim, you’ll cross to the opposite bank by ferry before continuing through picturesque meadow scenery, eventually reaching Rastatt, home to its charming Baroque old town.
Today’s ride takes you peacefully along the old branches of the Rhine, through landscapes that feel wonderfully unspoilt. You’ll then continue across the largest nature reserve in the Palatinate, the Hördter Rheinauen, before arriving in the former fortified town of Germersheim. The reshaped banks of the Rhine and the town’s relaxed centre offer plenty to enjoy.
The mighty Rhine guides you onwards to the historic imperial city of Speyer, home to its striking UNESCO World Heritage cathedral. Further highlights today include the renowned palace and beautifully landscaped gardens in Schwetzingen, before finishing your journey in Heidelberg, Germany’s oldest university town.
You’ll follow the River Neckar by bike to the historic Roman town of Ladenburg, where a charming medieval centre awaits. From there, continue through the Rhine valley to the imperial city of Worms, known for its 12th-century cathedral, the Martin Luther monument, and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe.
You’ll enjoy an easy ride along the River Rhine, with fertile farmland stretching out around you throughout the day. This region is known for producing all sorts of delicious local goods. At times, the route follows the old branches of the Rhine before crossing to the opposite bank, where the first vineyards begin to appear.
After a few more kilometres and one final river crossing, you’ll arrive in the charming wine-producing village of Nierstein. Be sure to treat yourself to a glass of local Riesling in the evening!
Today’s ride is a shorter one, leaving you with plenty of time to relax and explore. Soon after leaving Nierstein, the route winds its way through vineyards, offering lovely views across the Rhine valley. The steep vine-covered slopes and the broad river are central to life in this region.
You’ll then follow the cycle path along the banks of the Rhine before heading into the heart of Mainz. The impressive imperial cathedral, along with many other sights, draws visitors from near and far.
