Rhine Cycle Path: Konstanz to Strasbourg
Multifaceted landscapes, impressive natural sights and historic towns make this cycling holiday along the Rhine Valley Cycle Route a truly varied experience on two wheels. Blending scenic riding with the international flair of the Germany–Switzerland–France border region, your cycling holiday begins at Rhine kilometre 0 in Constance.
Following the High Rhine and Lake Constance section of the route, you cycle on to Schaffhausen, where you can experience one of Europe’s largest natural spectacles – the thundering Rhine Falls. From there, your cycling tour continues towards Basel via the trumpeter town of Bad Säckingen. This compact yet cosmopolitan city offers a lively cultural atmosphere and is a highlight of any Rhine cycling holiday.
From Basel, the Rhine turns north to become the Upper Rhine. Here, sun-drenched vineyards and historic castles await in the Markgräflerland region around Müllheim and Badenweiler. As part of your cycling holiday along the Rhine Valley Cycle Route, you also discover Freiburg – the “Bächle city” – and can enjoy a glass of wine from the nearby Kaiserstuhl region.
Further along the route, an excursion into Alsace introduces you to Strasbourg, the capital of Europe, with its charming old town and distinctive French-German heritage. The gentle to moderate gradients and longer daily distances of the well-maintained Rhine Cycle Route make this cycling holiday suitable for experienced cyclists.

Itinerary
Welcome to your cycling tour along the Rhine Valley Cycle Route! Constance is the perfect place to begin your journey and get into the spirit of travelling along the Rhine. Explore the lively Old Town and the historic Niederburg district. From the cathedral tower, you can enjoy superb panoramic views across the city towards neighbouring Switzerland and the Alps. At the harbour stands the nine-metre-high Imperia statue, a striking symbol of the Council of Constance, which took place in the 15th century. The Council Building in Constance was also the venue for the only papal election ever held on German soil.
On the first stage of your cycling tour along the Rhine Valley Cycle Route, you ride through picturesque Swiss fishing villages beside the Lower Lake on your way to Stein am Rhein. The colourful painted facades of the medieval old town houses and the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Georgen are sure to impress. Back on your bike, you cross between Germany and Switzerland several times before following the Rhine Cycle Path to the cantonal capital of Schaffhausen. The town’s landmark is the Munot fortress, which rises above the town surrounded by vineyards. During an evening stroll, admire the many historic oriel windows and listen out for the Munotglöggli bell, which rings every evening at precisely 9 pm.
Just a stone’s throw from Schaffhausen lies Europe’s largest and most powerful waterfall. During the included boat trip, you can get remarkably close to the roaring waters of the Rhine Falls. Continuing along the Rhine, you pass Rheinau Monastery, beautifully situated on an island in the river and considered one of the most important monasteries in Switzerland. A few climbs await you before reaching your destination, but the magnificent views across the Rhine landscape make every effort worthwhile. Your overnight stay is in Waldshut-Tiengen.
Several worthwhile stops await you on today’s stage of your cycling tour along the Rhine Valley Cycle Route. The historic old town of Laufenburg is perfect for a leisurely stroll, while the trumpeter town of Bad Säckingen is home to Europe’s longest covered wooden bridge. From Rheinfelden, you also have the option of taking the train to Basel to shorten the stage (not included). Alongside its many parks and vibrant cultural scene, Basel boasts the highest concentration of museums in Switzerland. Climb one of the two towers of Basel Cathedral and enjoy a unique view across the city and the Rhine — a rewarding sight after conquering the 250 steps to the top.
Leaving Basel behind, you cycle northwards away from the tri-border region towards Müllheim and Badenweiler. Müllheim is regarded as the wine capital of the Markgräflerland, where countless vineyards flourish in the warm climate, producing excellent sun-ripened white wines. Nearby Badenweiler is renowned for its long tradition of thermal springs, whose healing waters were already appreciated by the Romans. High above the town stands Baden Castle, and from its restored keep you can enjoy magnificent views across the Rhine Plain and the Black Forest.
At the foot of the Black Forest, you cycle on to Freiburg, Germany’s southernmost city. The striking feature of the Old Town is its cathedral, built from red sandstone and regarded as one of the masterpieces of German Gothic architecture. On Münsterplatz, you can enjoy a typical sausage — the 35-centimetre Rostbratwurst, a crispy local speciality and a true symbol of the city.
During a later stroll through Freiburg, look out for the Bächle. These narrow water channels have been documented since the Middle Ages and still flow cheerfully through the Old Town. However, local folklore warns that anyone who accidentally steps into one is destined to marry a Freiburg resident.
On the sixth stage of your cycling tour along the Rhine Valley Cycle Route, you return once again to the Rhine. The town of Breisach is already visible from afar. St Stephen’s Minster, rising high above the Rhine Plain, is an impressive landmark both inside and out. From the historic old town behind the cathedral, you can enjoy views across Alsace and the Black Forest.
Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl, made up of seven united wine-growing villages, is the largest wine-growing community in Baden-Württemberg. Here you can also visit Germany’s only corkscrew museum. You will spend the night in Breisach, Vogtsburg, or Vogelgrun.
You cycle through the vineyards of the Kaiserstuhl towards Ettenheim, with some ascents to tackle in the first kilometres of the stage. Ettenheim lies nestled among gently rolling vineyards, idyllic forests and orchards. Its Baroque old town impresses with narrow streets and beautifully preserved half-timbered houses and townhouses.
A few kilometres away is Europa-Park in Rust (not included), Germany’s largest amusement park, which draws visitors with a wide range of attractions, shows and themed areas.
The final stage of your cycling tour along the Rhine Cycle Path takes you back to the Rhine, which you follow to Kehl. After crossing the river, you reach the centre of your destination, Strasbourg, after just a few kilometres.
The capital of Europe offers an international atmosphere alongside picturesque corners in the tanners’ quarter of La Petite France. You can also visit the impressive Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg. If you climb the cathedral tower, your efforts are rewarded with panoramic views stretching as far as the Vosges, the Black Forest and the Kaiserstuhl.
In the evening, enjoy traditional Alsatian cuisine in a cosy wine bar.

Route information
The Rhine Cycle Route from Konstanz to Strasbourg follows one of Europe’s most popular long-distance cycling corridors, offering a largely gentle and well-signposted profile along the Rhine.
From Konstanz, the route runs along Lake Constance and the High Rhine with mostly flat riverside cycling and only occasional light undulations. Between Schaffhausen and Basel, the terrain remains easy, following the river closely and passing through scenic towns and countryside.
North of Basel, the profile changes slightly as the Rhine becomes the Upper Rhine. While much of the route is still flat and comfortable, short climbs appear in vineyard regions such as Markgräflerland and around the Kaiserstuhl, adding some variety without becoming too demanding.
Overall, the route is considered easy to moderate: ideal for multi-day cycling holidays, with predominantly flat riding, well-maintained cycle paths, and only a few gentle to moderate ascents in the wine-growing regions before reaching Strasbourg.
