Rhine Cycle Path: Cologne to Arnhem

The Rhine Cycle Route from Switzerland to Cologne is well known among cycling enthusiasts, yet the equally scenic stretch from Cologne to the Netherlands remains something of a hidden gem—unfairly so, in our view.

This largely flat route is ideal for cycling holidays, offering a wonderful mix of culture, nature, industrial heritage, and historic landmarks, along with excellent food and a vibrant atmosphere throughout.

Your journey begins in the heart of Cologne, a city famous for its cheerful and humorous locals—not just during carnival season. From here, you set off towards the charming fortified town of Zons, with its perfectly preserved medieval walls, before continuing to Düsseldorf’s Old Town, often referred to as the “longest bar in the world”.

In Duisburg, you have the opportunity to take a fascinating boat tour through Europe’s largest inland port, or explore the impressive Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, where you can even climb a former blast furnace. Further along the route, Wesel offers insights into Prussian history, while Xanten boasts remarkable Roman archaeological sites.

The journey then continues through the wide and peaceful floodplains of the Lower Rhine to Emmerich, known for its attractive riverside promenade. Finally, you cross into the Netherlands and follow the Rhine into its delta region, finishing in the lively city of Arnhem, a great place for shopping and relaxation.

From Arnhem, there are convenient rail connections back to Cologne, or you can extend your cycling holiday by continuing along the Rhine all the way to its North Sea outlet near Rotterdam.

Itinerary

Arrive in Cologne in good time and visit the famous Cologne Cathedral as well as the picturesque Old Town.

With Cologne’s sense of humour in your luggage, you leave the cathedral city and cycle along the banks of the Rhine until you reach the medieval town of Zons. This fortress town, with its fully preserved city walls, is also known as the “Rothenburg of the Rhineland.”

Highlights include the mighty Rhine Tower (built in 1388), the Juddeturm with its Baroque dome, and a windmill dating back to the 17th century.

You then continue along the Rhine Cycle Path and reach Düsseldorf’s Old Town in the afternoon, often referred to as “the longest bar in the world.” This nickname comes from the 250 pubs, restaurants, and bars lining its streets. Relax with a traditional Düsseldorf Altbier at Castle Square and enjoy the wonderful view of the Rhine.

Cycling once again along the Rhine, you first reach Kaiserswerth, home to the picturesque ruins of the Kaiserpfalz. Shortly afterwards, you take a ferry to cross to the left bank of the Rhine.

From there, take a short detour to visit the moated Castle Linn. The green floodplains gradually give way to impressive industrial architecture, and the cycle path leads you back to the right bank of the Rhine near the mouth of the River Ruhr.

From here, it is only a short distance to central Duisburg. It is well worth taking a boat tour of Europe’s largest inland port before ending the evening at one of the many bars and restaurants along the harbour and waterfront.

A short train journey (about 6 minutes) takes you to the Duisburg district of Meiderich. From here, you cycle directly to Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, a 200-hectare former steelworks.

You can join a guided tour focusing on industrial history and even climb the blast furnace (available from May to September). Visitors can explore former ore bunkers and learn about the casting house, gasometer, and blower hall.

After this impressive visit—certainly a highlight of the trip—you follow a comfortable cycle path along a former railway line back to the Rhine. After a few kilometres, you continue along the left bank through peaceful countryside and nature reserves in the Lower Rhine region.

Your destination is the Hanseatic town of Wesel, home to the Prussian Museum. A truly varied day of cycling!

Today, the Rhine Cycle Path first leads you to Xanten, known for its historic Old Town, the richly decorated St. Victor’s Cathedral, and the Archaeological Park with its Roman Museum—well worth a visit on its own.

You then continue past inviting bathing lakes and enjoy scenic views of the wild Rhine current as you head towards the amusement park Wunderland Kalkar.

Finally, you reach Germany’s longest suspension bridge, often referred to as the “Golden Gate of the Lower Rhine.” Your destination is the former Hanseatic town of Emmerich, where the beautiful Rhine promenade invites you to enjoy a relaxing evening stroll.

Today’s stage offers new impressions from the start. In the morning, you cross the Rhine by ferry to the Dutch side and cycle past the point where the river splits into the Waal and the Nederrijn.

This area is known as the Rhine Delta, which extends all the way to the North Sea. Follow the Nederrijn along raised paths, passing locks and bridges, until you reach the historic city of Arnhem.

Here, you can enjoy a variety of shopping opportunities. At the “Bridge of Arnhem” Information Centre, you can explore the city’s history, while the Open Air Museum features more than 80 historic Dutch houses and windmills.
