Elbe Cycle Path: Magdeburg to Hamburg
Some of Germany’s most picturesque riverside scenery can be found along the Elbe. Floodplain woodlands, expansive meadows and peaceful tributaries shape the landscape as you follow the river from Magdeburg all the way to the North Sea through this idyllic natural environment. Scattered throughout the region are remarkable examples of historic architecture, including the medieval castle at Tangermünde, the palace in Lauenburg, and many traditional half-timbered and brick-built buildings. Hamburg is known as the gateway to the world, and is a memorable conclusion to a remarkable cycling journey.

Itinerary
Arrival in Magdeburg. Then, after in the afternoon, the bikes will be distributed and our tour guide will provide you with all the essential information. Afterwards, you’ll have the chance to explore the beautiful former imperial city at your leisure.
Your route passes through a number of small villages, including a diversion to the Romanesque monastery church at Jerichow, before continuing to Tangermünde. The town has retained its medieval character to this day. The medieval castle and the town, established around 800 years ago under its protection, stand on a plateau overlooking the distinctive floodplain scenery and the point where the small River Tanger flows into the Elbe.
The “Old Elbe” nature reserve offers a relaxing start to today’s cycling day. The ride takes you past Storkau Castle to Havelberg, the “island and cathedral town in the countryside”. Small, almost inconspicuous, it lies at the confluence of the Havel and Elbe rivers. The cathedral, built in Renaissance and Baroque style, and the pretty old town are certainly worth seeing.
Today’s cycle follows a quiet route through the Elbe glacial valley to the small town of Wittenberge, known for its distinctive skyline and the second-largest tower clock in Europe. You then continue into the UNESCO Elbe-Brandenburg Biosphere Reserve, passing through one of Germany’s most captivating river landscapes, before reaching Schnackenburg and its well-known Borderland Museum. Overnight accommodation is in the Gartow am See area.
Today you follow the romantic meanders of the Elbe to the city of Hitzacker. The town lies on the “German Half-Timbered House Road” and has a picturesque old town with North German brick architecture.
The route to Lauenburg is fairly undulating. The historic town skyline, set against the banks of the River Elbe, gives the town its distinctive character. The castle, with its imposing tower, together with the spire of St Mary Magdalene’s Church, dominates the panorama. The Fürstengarten (Prince’s Garden) is particularly picturesque, and the views across the Elbe nature reserves and the surrounding countryside stretching towards Lüneburg are superb.
Cyclist-friendly routes follow the River Elbe through Geesthacht towards the major port and vibrant city of Hamburg, renowned for its many landmarks, thriving arts and cultural scene, and distinctive atmosphere.
