Lithuanian Lakelands

Lithuania, a small Baltic gem rich in history and natural beauty, is fast becoming a must-visit destination for cyclists seeking authentic experiences. While many tourists come to enjoy the golden sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea and explore Lithuania’s charming medieval towns, we offer something truly unique: an unforgettable cycling holiday through the breathtaking lake region of Lithuania.

Just north of the capital city, Vilnius, lies a magical land of pristine forests, shimmering lakes, and rolling hills—Aukštaitija, known as the “Upland” region. This enchanting area, still largely undiscovered by mass tourism, is home to hundreds of crystal-clear lakes, winding rivers, and fairy-tale wooden villages that seem frozen in time. You’ll encounter historic noble residences, untouched wilderness reminiscent of Scandinavia, and a perfect blend of rustic charm with modern comfort—all at an affordable price.

Join us for a self-guided cycling tour through the heart of Lithuania’s stunning lake district. Starting and ending in the historic town of Ukmergė, this active holiday offers a unique way to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Aukštaitija. Pedal through scenic landscapes, breathe in the fresh forest air, and relax by picturesque lakesides—an ideal adventure for nature lovers, cyclists, and anyone looking for a rejuvenating escape.

Itinerary

Arrive in the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius. Spend time in the city that boasts a UNESCO-listed Old Town, vibrant culture, baroque architecture, and a lively arts scene.

Continue your journey with a short one-hour bus or taxi ride to Ukmergė.

This charming town sits high on the banks of the picturesque Šventoji River, offering scenic views from the historic castle hill viewing platform. Ukmergė is home to beautifully preserved wooden villas, a historic Jewish synagogue, and a unique Old Believer prayer house (molenna), reflecting its rich cultural heritage.

Enjoy an overnight stay at the cosy four-star boutique hotel Big Stone. In your free time, take a relaxing bike ride to local attractions such as the miniature park, unwind on the riverside beach, or sample the excellent local craft beer, Vilkmergės.

We head east, and after just 15 km on the easier route, you’ll be greeted by the stunning azure waters of a large lake and the inviting beach in the charming village of Balninkai—a perfect spot to pause and take in the natural beauty of Lithuania’s lake region.

For those seeking a more adventurous cycling experience, the alternative route follows scenic gravel roads through gently rolling moraine landscapes. Along the way, don’t miss the beautifully preserved wooden church in Šešuoliai, a hidden gem steeped in history. Further on, you can relax on a tranquil island in the lake at Žalvariai, an idyllic place to unwind.

Your day ends in Molėtai, the main tourist hub of the region, where a newly opened, elegant hotel awaits, offering comfort and style after a rewarding day of cycling.

We venture into the very heart of Lithuania’s stunning lake region, where nature, history, and adventure come together. From the 36-metre-high lookout tower, you can take in breathtaking panoramic views over the shimmering waters of Lake Baltieji Lakajai—one of the region’s most beautiful sights.

Next, we arrive in Labanoras, the smallest town in Lithuania, renowned for its traditional wooden architecture and untouched natural charm. This picturesque village offers a glimpse into the country’s rural past, surrounded by forests and lakes that define the region.

The highlight of this stage is undoubtedly the historic water mill in Ginučiai, a rare surviving example of 19th-century engineering. The foaming water rushing through its wooden trough creates a lively, playful atmosphere—like a natural aquapark—perfect for a fun and refreshing break.

The journey continues along a scenic lakeside path, skirting the tranquil shores of Lake Lūšiai, a peaceful route ideal for cycling enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

In Ignalina, the gateway to Aukštaitija National Park, we turn west and enter a world of pure, unspoilt nature—an absolute highlight for cycling and outdoor enthusiasts. This stage of the journey offers a true immersion in Lithuania’s most beautiful landscapes: endless forests, crystal-clear lakes, wild beaches, wooden footbridges, and scenic trails that run right along the water’s edge.

We pass the stunning Lake Baluošas, famous for its eight picturesque islands, and cycle alongside Lake Tauragnas, Lithuania’s deepest and one of its most enchanting lakes, stretching like a silver ribbon through the landscape.

This is cycling at its best: peaceful, scenic, and deeply connected to the heart of Lithuania’s breathtaking lake region.

The route takes us past Rubikiai Lake, one of the largest and most scenic lakes in Lithuania, perfect for cycling enthusiasts who appreciate stunning natural surroundings. Next, we visit the charming village of Burbiškis, home to an impressive manor house complex formerly owned by the noble Węcławowicz family. The manor’s beautifully preserved palace interiors offer a fascinating glimpse into Lithuania’s aristocratic past.

Our journey continues to Anykščiai, a beloved resort town popular with artists and creatives. Here, you can explore the unique narrow-gauge railway station-museum, browse shops filled with original souvenirs, and visit local art galleries. After a day of discovery, relax and unwind at the hotel with a luxurious SPA, where we spend the night.

After exploring the stunning lakes, it’s time for an unforgettable river adventure. We cycle along a well-maintained path on the banks of the Šventoji River—meaning “the holy one”—the longest river flowing entirely within Lithuania. Its crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches provide the perfect spot for a refreshing swim during your cycling holiday.

The route then winds through protected forest reserves, leading to an impressive treetop walking path with a panoramic lookout tower, offering breathtaking views over the surrounding woodland.

Our journey concludes in Ukmergė, where you complete the circuit by spinning the iconic rotating stone sculpture located outside the charming Big Stone Hotel, a perfect end to an immersive lake and river cycling experience.
