Kattegat route from Helsingborg
Sweden’s characteristic west Coast awaits you with its quaint fishing villages and ports along this coastal route. Once you get closer to the larger town of Gothenburg, the landscape becomes noticeably different with dramatic cliffs, deep forests, cosy bays, and cute harbours. Enjoy all of the delights that this area of Sweden is known for, and even extend your time if 8 days isn’t enough!
Itinerary
Make your own way to Helsingborg where a central hotel awaits you. From here you can easily access the city’s sites, for example the medieval watchtower Kärnan and St. Mary’s Church.
Your cycling will start with a ride on the promenade in Helsingborg, along which you will quickly encounter Sofiero Palace with its gardens. In 2010 this was deemed “Europe’s most beautiful park”. Go on along the shore passing quaint fishing villages, one of which is called Höganäs, which is famous for its salt-glazes ceramics. From here, continue along the Kulla peninsula to your stop for the night of Ängelholm.
As you leave Ängelholm your sights will be set on the coast as you go towards Vejbystrand, from here the direction will be inland and over the peninsula towards Båstad. This side has one of Sweden’s longest sandy beaches, which you will cycle along. On your route to Halmstad you will go past nature reserves Tönnrersa and Gullbranna.
The highlight of today is Tylösand, this is Sweden’s most famous beach and there is also a fantastic hotel there worth visiting. Once you’ve enjoyed your time here, carry on along the north coast, characterised by open countryside, nature reserves, and fertile farmland. Today’s destination is Falkenberg, one of the region’s oldest medieval towns.
Today’s route is characterised by beautiful fishing villages, artists, and artisans. In Träslövsläge try some of the delicious local lobsters and ice cream. Wander around the old parts of the city and then head to your stop for the night of Varberg, home to an amazing fortress.
As you head north of Varberg the scenery becomes very different, the landscapes become very rocky, and you can begin to see more islands in the sea. Your route to Kungsbacka is filled with fields and horse farms, enjoy this pleasant small town and delightful city.
Today a royal day awaits you! Go via Vallda and Särö, a place of leisure for the ancient royal family and high society. From here you will go along an old railway that has been turned into a cycle lane. The way to Gothenburg will delight you will cliffs, vibrant forests, bays, and marinas.

Most of the route is well-signposted on designated bike paths, but there will also be some gravel roads and side roads with low levels of traffic. The route is mostly flat but also with some hillier parts.
