Funen Island and Odense

The wonderful island Funen is often referred to as the garden of Denmark. Funen is also in the centre of Denmark, making the island very accessible from both Copenhagen Airport and with the train directly from the rest of Europe.

South of Funen lies the archipelago with small picturesque islands connected by ferries, offering both a break in the bike riding and also an experience of being off the beaten track where time and speed is really not that important.

Itinerary

Odensee is the third largest city in Denmark and the birthplace of famous poet and writer Hans Christian Andersen, whose legacy can be seen throughout the 1000-year-old city. In the centre is the Sankt Knuds Kirke Cathedral, one of the most important Gothic buildings in Denmark and whose structure demonstrates the prosperity the city had in the Middle Ages.

Today your cycling will begin! You will be going along the Odensee Å route, which leads you out of Odensee via the suburbs. On route we recommend taking a break in Brobyværk, where you shouldn’t miss a meal in Brobyværk Kro. From here the previously flat route becomes a bit hillier as you reach what are known as the “Funen Alps”. This hillier terrain takes you through a beautiful nature reserve and glacial moraine landscape, until you get to your stop for the night of Faaborg.

On today’s leg of the journey, you will not be far from the sea as you head to Svendborg, a quaint coastal town. One of the places of interest here is the Hvides Gård, the town’s oldest building and in the evening it’s delightful to take an evening stroll by the harbour and marvel at the boats. You can see wooden boats and sailing boats anchored at Sejlskibsbroen for a real nautical feeling.

Today you will swap bike for ferry as you head to the South-Danish coast, heading for Ærøskøbing, which is the oldest town on the island. Here you have time to explore the island on either the western side or the eastern side. Some of the highlights include Marstal, the cliffs of Voderup Klint, the hunting lodge of Søbygaard, and the lighthouse of Skjoldnæs.. It will be a truly relaxing day of cycling and depending on what you want to do can be for a shorter or longer time. The ferry will take you back to Svendborg at the end of the day.

Whilst cycling to Nyborg enjoy the views of passing beaches and make sure to take a break to visit one. As you are cycling with your view of the sea you will also see the Great Belt Bridge, before getting to Nyborg. Here is the oldest royal castle in Denmark, which was home to many Danish kings and full of history.

A first stop of the day can be in Kerteminde, where there is a marine research centre called Fjord & Bælt. Here you can learn about the ecosystem and porpoises and seals. There is  also the opportunity to take a longer break at the beach.

Your tour will end here unless you opt to add more days, which we would be happy to accommodate.
