Itinerary

After making your own way to Trier, get acquainted with what is considered the oldest city in Germany. Visit many Roman monuments scattered about.

We recommend starting the day visiting the amphitheatre and Porta Nigra. You will then start cycling along the Moselle. On the way you can learn about grape varieties and pass by Neumagen-Dhron, Germany’s oldest wine village. In Piesport you can also taste a glass of local wine, what better way could you finish the day?

Your first stop of the day is Bernkastel-Kues, home to numerous alleys and half-timbered houses and where we recommend trying the well-known ‘Bernkasteler Doctor’ local wine. The rest of the journey also provides lots of wine as you head through the growing district of “Kröver Nacktarsch”, for an additional cost you can take a boat ride showing you beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards. Your stop for the night is Traben-Trarbach, here you can find some fascinating art nouveau and Belle Epoch buildings.

Today is another day of gliding through dreamy vineyards. The first point to note is Enkirch, this charming area is home to half-timbered houses and perfect for a break. Your route will be following the river Moselle and will take you past a further wine-growing area called ‘Zeller Schwarze Katz’. Your stop for the night is Cochem, this town has a pleasant centre and 11th-century castle to visit.

After not much time on the bike you will get to the medieval castle of ‘Burg Eltz’, considered one of the most beautiful and intact castles of Germany, which sits enchantingly in the countryside. Cycling once again on the Moselle Bike Path you will go past numerous quaint wine villages until your destination of Koblenz. The centre sits at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine River and is a perfect spot for a stroll.

Now you will be cycling along the Rhine River as the River Lahn starts to flow into the Rhine in Lahnstein. On the way you can see multiple wine villages such as Boppard. In St.Goar make sure you make some time for Loreley, a slate cliff and also the name of the mermaid who sits on top of it. 19th century legend says she used to comb her long golden hair there attracting boatmen with her singing, causing shipwrecks.

Cycle in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley as you are surrounded by numerous castles and palaces sitting high above the Rhine. Stop in charming villages and vineyards to sample some local, fruity wine. There is also the worthwhile opportunity to detour to Eberbach monastery. Stopping in Rüdesheim will welcome you with its famous “Drosselgasse” street. As you get to Mainz get acquainted with this historical town home to half-timbered houses and a medieval market square.

Enjoy a last breakfast and then either head home or stay for longer. We recommend taking more time to enjoy the amazing city that is Mainz.
