Itinerary

Take a stroll through the “New Centre” of Passau, the picturesque Three Rivers City and a key starting point of the renowned Danube Cycle Path. This vibrant district has been completely redesigned as a spacious, car-free pedestrian zone, offering a perfect place to explore before setting off on your cycling adventure.

Enjoy the charm of wide promenades, inviting cafés, and boutique shops, all set against the stunning backdrop of Passau’s historic architecture and scenic riverbanks. As a gateway to the Danube Cycle Path from Passau to Vienna, this revitalised area provides a relaxing environment for cyclists and visitors alike to unwind before or after their journey.

On the Danube Cycle Path, you’ll journey through the breathtaking Upper Danube Valley, a region rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. One of the first highlights along the route is the charming village of Engelhartszell, home to the renowned Abbey Church of Engelszell. This Trappist monastery, the only one in Austria, is famous for its distinctive Baroque architecture and its production of artisanal liquors and cheeses, making it a delightful stop for cyclists.

Continuing your ride through the serene landscapes of Niederranna, you’ll soon arrive at one of the most spectacular sights along the Danube: the Schlögener Schlinge. Here, the river makes a dramatic 180-degree turn, forced into this unique bend by the granite formations of the Bohemian Massif. This natural phenomenon is one of the most photographed locations on the Passau to Vienna cycle route and offers breathtaking panoramic views.

As you cross the Danube by ferry, take a moment to soak in the awe-inspiring scenery. The forested hills, cliffs, and ever-changing river landscapes make this section of the route truly unforgettable. With well-maintained cycling paths and stunning viewpoints, the Schlögener Schlinge is a must-experience highlight of your Danube cycling adventure.

Today’s journey on the Danube Cycle Path takes you through the picturesque Eferding Basin, a region known for its lush green landscapes and fertile plains. As you follow the river’s gentle curves, you’ll pass through charming Danube market towns, including Aschach, Ottensheim, and Wilhering, each offering a glimpse into Austria’s rich history and culture.

Your destination is Linz, the vibrant capital of Upper Austria. Known for its motto, “In Linz, it begins,” the city invites you to explore its lively historic old town, where you’ll find a variety of traditional cafés, modern bistros, and cosy beer gardens—perfect for a well-earned break.

As a former European Capital of Culture (2009), Linz seamlessly blends history with innovation. For breathtaking panoramic views, take a trip up to Pöstlingberg, a hilltop offering stunning vistas over the city and the Danube. Alternatively, enjoy a relaxing stroll along the Danube promenade, where you can soak in the dynamic atmosphere, explore contemporary museums like the Ars Electronica Centre, or unwind by the river.

With its mix of culture, history, and scenic beauty, Linz is a must-visit stop on your Passau to Vienna cycling adventure, offering both relaxation and inspiration before the next leg of your journey.

Today’s ride on the Danube Cycle Path offers a refreshing change of scenery as you briefly leave the riverbanks to explore some of Austria’s most historic and culturally rich towns.

Your first stop is St. Florian, home to the impressive Augustinian Abbey, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. This stunning monastery, known for its grand interiors and the tomb of composer Anton Bruckner, is a true highlight for history and music enthusiasts.

Continuing onward, you’ll reach Enns, officially recognised as Austria’s oldest city. Take time to explore its charming town square, where the 60-meter-high town tower stands as an enduring symbol of the town’s medieval heritage. For history lovers, a visit to the Lauriacum City Museum offers fascinating insights into the region’s Roman past, showcasing archaeological treasures from the ancient settlement.

After your explorations, you’ll return to the Danube’s scenic banks, cycling toward the beautiful Baroque town of Grein. Here, you can visit Austria’s oldest still-active municipal theatre, the fascinating Shipping Museum, or the historic Greinburg Castle, which boasts stunning river views.

Leaving Upper Austria, your journey continues into the Weinviertel region, where you’ll arrive in Marbach, a charming town nestled amid rolling vineyards and rich local wine culture, offering the perfect setting to relax and unwind after a day of cycling.

As you arrive in Melk, be sure to pause and look up—perched high above the Danube, the magnificent Melk Abbey is a true architectural masterpiece. This Baroque jewel, with its golden façade and grand domes, is one of Austria’s most iconic landmarks, offering breathtaking views of the river and the surrounding landscape.

Leaving Melk behind, you’ll enter the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its rolling vineyards, fragrant orchards, and picturesque villages. This stretch of the Danube Cycle Path is one of the most scenic, inviting you to slow down and take in the beauty of the region.

As you cycle through this renowned wine-growing region, you’ll pass through the charming town of Weißenkirchen, known for its historic wine taverns and scenic terraces. Further along, the ruins of Dürnstein Castle rise dramatically above the valley—this is where King Richard the Lionheart was famously imprisoned in the 12th century.

Your journey continues to Krems, a city with over 1,000 years of history, where medieval streets, vibrant cultural landmarks, and world-class wine tastings await. Whether you’re admiring historic sites or indulging in local specialities, the Wachau offers a truly unforgettable cycling experience.

As you leave Krems, the final leg of your Danube Cycle Path adventure takes you through the charming flower city of Tulln, known for its beautifully landscaped gardens and artistic heritage. Continuing onward, you’ll pass through Klosterneuburg, home to the magnificent Klosterneuburg Monastery, a stunning Baroque abbey with a rich history and renowned wine production.

From here, the majestic city of Vienna awaits. As you arrive in Austria’s vibrant capital, take a well-deserved break in one of its legendary coffeehouses, where you can savour a “Verlängerter” (Austrian-style coffee) alongside a decadent slice of Sachertorte—a classic Viennese chocolate cake.

Vienna offers endless opportunities for exploration. Wander down Mariahilfer Straße, the city’s premier shopping boulevard, lined with stylish boutiques and charming cafés. Marvel at the breathtaking St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an architectural gem at the heart of the city. For a truly Viennese experience, take a ride in a traditional “Fiaker”, one of the iconic horse-drawn carriages that allow you to admire the city’s historic streets in timeless elegance.

As your cycling journey comes to an end, Vienna’s imperial charm, rich culture, and world-famous cuisine provide the perfect finale to an unforgettable ride along the Danube Cycle Path from Passau to Vienna.
