Itinerary

Discover the captivating metropolis on the Danube. Budapest enchants visitors with its grand architecture and iconic landmarks, including the Parliament Building, Fisherman’s Bastion and the historic Castle District. Enjoy sweeping views from the Chain Bridge or relax in one of the city’s famous thermal baths. Rich in history, charm and culture, Budapest promises unforgettable experiences – the perfect start or finish to any cycling holiday along the Danube.

Today, you bid farewell to the Hungarian capital and begin your first stage along the Danube. This gentle day of cycling leads you through picturesque river scenery, peaceful villages and wide-open fields dotted with small farms and poplar groves – ideal conditions for a relaxed ride on your cycling holiday.

As you continue south, you’ll pass tranquil meadows and the Danube’s beautiful oxbow lakes, perfect spots for a short break in nature. The historic town of Ráckeve, situated on the lush Csepel Island, offers a welcoming pause. Its impressive Serbian Orthodox Church is well worth a visit, while the waterfront cafés and boat moorings invite you to unwind before continuing your journey along the Danube and the EuroVelo 6 route.

This easy-going stage leads you into the rural heart of southern Hungary. You’ll cycle mainly along the Danube, passing peaceful farming villages, orchards, open fields and idyllic riverbank scenery. As you ride, you’ll experience the calm beauty of the Danube floodplains, with opportunities to pause in traditional csárdas or stop for a warm welcome from local farmers.

A free shuttle service is available to take you comfortably from Harta and Géderlak to Kalocsa, though keen cyclists may prefer to complete the entire stage under their own steam. Kalocsa is renowned for its elegant Baroque architecture, its fascinating Paprika Museum and its vibrant folk traditions – a cultural highlight of any cycling holiday along the Danube or the EuroVelo 6 route.

Today’s stage leads you into the Danube–Drava National Park, one of Hungary’s most scenic and ecologically significant protected areas. Following the course of the Danube and Drava rivers, this remarkable landscape features alluvial forests, tranquil oxbow lakes, wetlands and flower-rich meadows – a peaceful natural haven perfect for exploring by bike on your Danube cycling holiday or EuroVelo 6 adventure.

In Baja, you can refuel with a bowl of its famous traditional fish soup before continuing the final kilometres to Mohács. This historic town is celebrated for its multicultural heritage and the vibrant Busó Festival, offering a memorable cultural highlight at the end of your day’s ride.

This cross-border stage links Hungary with Croatia and offers some of the most scenic landscapes of your Danube cycling holiday. The broad Danube–Drava delta is largely flat, making for an easy and enjoyable ride through peaceful river scenery and charming rural villages. A highlight of the day is the Kopački Rit Nature Park, one of Europe’s most significant wetlands and a true paradise for nature lovers cycling along EuroVelo 6.

In Batina, take a moment to visit the war memorial overlooking the Danube, where you can enjoy sweeping panoramic views across the river valley. Your day concludes in Osijek, a city known for its elegant Baroque architecture, vibrant atmosphere and the picturesque banks of the Drava – a fitting end to a memorable stage.

This stage carries you from Osijek to Bačka Palanka and is shaped by transitions – between countries, languages and cultures, as well as between lively towns and peaceful rural scenery. The route guides you through small Croatian villages rooted in agriculture and influenced by a blend of Croatian, Hungarian and Serbian traditions, offering a fascinating insight into the region’s multicultural character.

By the end of the stage, you’ll cross the border into Serbia. Welcome to Vojvodina, a true cultural crossroads shaped by Danube Swabians, Serbs, Hungarians and Croats. Be sure to visit the impressive Orthodox church in Bačka Palanka, and when hunger strikes, sample local favourites such as cevapčići or hearty Serbian goulash served with fresh bread – the perfect way to round off another rewarding day on your Danube cycling holiday along EuroVelo 6.

Today’s stage leads you to Novi Sad, a vibrant university city and the capital of Vojvodina. As you follow the Danube on this section of your EuroVelo 6 cycling holiday, you’ll enjoy a wonderfully varied landscape of floodplains, vineyards and historic towns.

A short detour brings you into the Fruška Gora National Park, a peaceful haven of wildlife, rare plant species and shaded forested valleys. The area is also famed for its sixteen medieval monasteries, each offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

Round off your day in Novi Sad with a glass of Vršac wine, taking in the glittering lights along the Danube promenade – a perfect end to another memorable day on your Danube cycling adventure.

Once again, you’ll follow the Danube, this time bordered by lush riverside forests that create a peaceful and scenic backdrop for your ride. Enjoy the serene atmosphere during a stop in small villages such as Stari Slankamen, where you can visit the historic church and experience genuine local hospitality. Traditional wineries along the route may entice you to taste regional grape varieties – a delightful treat on your Danube cycling holiday along EuroVelo 6.

Your final destination is Belgrade, the vibrant capital of Serbia. Here you can wander through the impressive Kalemegdan Fortress or explore the lively Savamala district, known for its trendy cafés, contemporary art galleries and buzzing nightlife. It’s a fitting finale to an unforgettable cycling journey through the heart of the Danube region.
