Itinerary
After making your own way to Bordeaux have an afternoon orientation meeting at your hotel and then enjoy the evening as you wish, perhaps with a glass of local wine.
When picturing Bordeaux, you may not imagine a cycling destination, but there is an excellent and safe route which uses that of an old railway. Here you can join the nature reserve of Bruges where there is a fascinating mix of plants and wildlife due to the wet meadows, grove, and ponds. This will take you through Landes Forest which will then lead you to Lancau where you can smell the ocean air.
The terrain today will take you through dunes and forest, far away from the buzz of road noise. On this leg of the route there is also great opportunity to leave the bike path to enjoy connections to the sea as well as amazing ocean views. The Atlantic is a majestic ocean with huge wages, which is why it’s a surfer’s paradise.
Staying close to the shore, keep going to discover new landscapes in direction of the Bay of Arcachon. The landscape here is drastically different from the territory of the Regional Natural Park of Landes de Gascogne. Get comfortable here as it will be your home for two nights.
After a few days of cycling, you will no-doubt be tired, so this is a perfect day to enjoy a day without a bike. In Arcachon you can decide what you want to do, and the options include the Dune of Pilat or enjoying a walk through the town centre. This area is famous for both its beach and architecture considered some of the most beautiful in the region.
After a fantastic day visiting the dune of Pilat, it’s time to head off on your bike again for a new destination and crossing the Landes Forest. Biscarrose is a fresh-water lake and is the second largest in France. Enjoy an idyllic setting of deep blue waters surrounding with green and fragrant pine forests.
Have a peaceful break at Le Parentis-en-Born port before heading through the forest of Sainte-Eulalie until you reach the ocean again. The ocean will come into your sights on your arrival to Mimizan-Plage, AKA the Pearl of the Silver Coas. Mimizan-Plage is famous for its surfer’s beaches, museu and a wonderful promenade to walk on.
Now leaving the warm beach atmosphere, you will be heading for the peaceful forest with delightful smells and tranquility. Your first stop for the day will be in Contis, where you can visit the only lighthouse in the moors, which is black and white striped. From here we recommend a stop at the beach of Cap de l’Homy where you can see a view of the gorgeous ocean and amazing Landes landscape. You will be spending the night in Soustons which has a museum, water-sporting activities and wine to be tried.
Cycling along the seaside you will pass by numerous seaside resorts, Seignosse, Hossegor, and Capbreton which all have unique atmospheres. Eventually you will go into the Basque country, where you will discover Bayonne a city of much art and history. From here follow the river Adour with the Basque mountains in the background, until you reach the forest of Chiberta and beaches of Anglet. Finally, you will arrive in Biarritz with the view of the golf of Cantabria.
After breakfast your trip will come to an end.
