Itinerary

Your cycling adventure begins with an individual arrival in Regensburg, one of Germany’s most historically rich cities. The city’s largely preserved medieval old town and the nearby Stadtamhof district have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006.

Regensburg is often described as an open-air museum, home to around 6,000 listed buildings—more than any other city in Europe. Wander its cobbled streets, admire the Gothic cathedral, stone bridge, and grand patrician houses, and soak up the lively atmosphere of this Bavarian treasure.

The perfect starting point for a cycling holiday along the Danube and Main-Danube Canal, Regensburg blends rich culture, stunning architecture, and riverside charm.

Your first cycling stage begins with a relaxed ride through idyllic Bavarian countryside, dotted with peaceful villages and lush river scenery. A key highlight along the way is Kelheim, where the Altmühl and Danube rivers meet. Towering above the town is the Liberation Hall – an awe-inspiring neoclassical monument commissioned by King Ludwig I. A short climb rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The route continues through the heart of the Altmühltal Nature Park, taking you along well-maintained cycle paths that wind through forested valleys, past dramatic rock formations, and alongside the romantic ruins of medieval castles.

Your destination is Riedenburg, fondly known as the “Pearl of the Altmühl Valley.” This charming town offers a warm welcome to cyclists with its medieval streets, historical flair, and inviting beer gardens – the perfect place to relax after a rewarding day in the saddle.

This relaxing cycling stage takes you through the heart of the Altmühl Valley along well-maintained, mostly flat bike paths—ideal for all levels of cycling enthusiasts. Your route leads to the charming town of Beilngries, where you can explore winding cobbled alleys and admire the impressive Baroque parish church.

Along the way, informative signboards provide fascinating insights into the region’s rich history and unique geological features, making this stage as educational as it is enjoyable.

Cycling holidays along this route offer plenty of opportunities to pause for a coffee break or simply soak up the tranquil beauty of the surrounding natural landscape—perfect for those seeking a peaceful and scenic ride.

Your cycling tour begins with a ride to the historic old town of Freystadt, where you can wander through the charming town centre and visit the stunning Maria-Hilf-Wallfahrtskirche. This Baroque pilgrimage church, one of Germany’s most significant, is beautifully set in a peaceful meadow just outside the town.

After soaking in the history and architecture, continue your cycling holiday to your destination for the day: the charming town of Roth.

This stage offers a wonderful blend of cultural exploration and scenic cycling, perfect for those looking to combine active travel with historic discovery.

Today’s cycling route takes you through the tranquil Rothsee Nature Park, offering beautiful natural scenery and well-maintained cycle paths. Next, you’ll discover the historic Main-Danube Canal—one of the world’s oldest canals—built under King Ludwig I and also known as the Ludwig Canal. Featuring 101 locks and stunning panoramic views, this engineering marvel is a highlight for any cycling holiday enthusiast.

In the afternoon, arrive in Nuremberg, a city steeped in history with a beautifully restored medieval old town. Explore the famous Historic Mile, where you can admire some of the city’s most significant buildings, meticulously rebuilt after World War II. This stop perfectly blends culture, history, and cycling adventure for a truly memorable holiday experience.

Today’s cycling holiday takes you along the picturesque Regnitz Cycle Route, winding through a scenic valley rich with greenery and natural beauty. As you depart the city, you’ll pass iconic landmarks such as the Kettensteg (Chain Bridge), the Henkersteg (Hangman’s Bridge), and the charming historic craftsmen’s houses lining Weißgerbergasse.

The route continues through the tranquil Hallerwiesen meadows, leading you along the restored floodplains of the Pegnitz River toward the vibrant town of Fürth. A short detour into Fürth’s historic centre is highly recommended to soak up its unique atmosphere.

From Fürth, pedal onward through peaceful river meadows, shaded by majestic oak trees intertwined with wild hops, before cycling through flat countryside and sandy pine forests en route to Erlangen. This leisurely ride offers the perfect blend of culture, nature, and relaxation for any cycling holiday enthusiast.

Your final cycling stage leads you through the picturesque meadow landscapes of the Regnitz Valley, following the well-marked Regnitz Cycle Route. Along the way, pause at one of the many traditional Franconian beer gardens to enjoy a refreshing local beer or a slice of homemade cake—perfect for relaxing and soaking up the local culture on your cycling holiday.

You’ll make a stop in Forchheim, a charming small town known for its authentic Franconian atmosphere and historic architecture. From there, continue your ride to the magnificent thousand-year-old imperial city of Bamberg—a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its medieval charm, half-timbered houses, and vibrant cultural scene.
