Itinerary

Make the most of your visit by arriving early – there’s so much to discover. Explore the magnificent Palace Sanssouci, the former summer residence of Frederick the Great, and stroll through its beautifully landscaped gardens. Discover the charming Russian Colony Alexandrowka, the picturesque Dutch Quarter, and the historic Bohemian Weaver Quarter, each offering unique insights into Potsdam’s rich cultural heritage.

Don’t miss the famous Film Park Babelsberg, where cinema history comes to life, or enjoy a relaxing cruise on one of the city’s excursion boats. With countless parks, gardens, and scenic spots waiting to be explored, Potsdam promises an unforgettable experience filled with history, art, and nature.

Your journey begins as you cycle over the iconic Glienicke Bridge, famously known as the “Bridge of Spies”. From there, the route takes you past the elegant Cecilienhof Palace, continuing to Wannsee and Sacrow, where history and natural beauty meet.

At Groß Glienicker See, you’ll encounter a preserved section of the original Berlin Wall, offering a powerful reminder of Germany’s divided past. Just beyond Spandau, discover Fort Hahneberg, a remarkable 19th-century fortress built in 1888 to protect the former Spandau armaments centre.

Your ride concludes in the charming citadel town of Spandau.

Begin your morning cycling adventure through the Spandauer Forst, a former GDR restricted area that was designated in 2000 as a nature reserve of European importance. The trail offers a peaceful blend of nature and history, with lush forests and traces of the past along the way.

A short detour along the Nieder Neuendorfer Canal is highly recommended to see the impressive 1,000-year-old oak trees — true natural monuments. Continuing past Lake Laßzinsee, you’ll soon reach the scenic banks of the River Havel.

Here you’ll find the listed Nieder Neuendorf Watchtower, built in 1987. Once used to monitor this border section and coordinate 18 nearby towers, it now houses a documentation centre dedicated to the history of Germany’s division and the role of its watchtowers.

End your ride in Hohen Neuendorf, where you can relax and reflect on the day’s journey through landscapes rich in both natural beauty and historical significance.

Follow the disused tracks of the Heidekrautbahn railway as you cycle past the Märkisches Viertel district towards the heart of Berlin-Mitte. Along the way, discover key historical sites linked to Germany’s division and reunification.

Visit the Bösebrücke Bridge and Bornholmer Straße, famous as the site of the first border opening on 9 November 1989. Stop at the Bernauer Straße Memorial, where daring refugees attempted to escape through windows along the border strip on 13 August 1961, and explore the Invalidenfriedhof Cemetery, over which the Berlin Wall once ran.

Continue to marvel at modern Berlin’s architectural highlights, including the new Berlin Central Station and the parliament and government district. Your journey culminates at the iconic Brandenburg Gate, the historic boulevard Unter den Linden, and Potsdamer Platz, which was once a tense no-man’s land during GDR times.

Pedal past the historic Stasi headquarters on your way to Checkpoint Charlie in Friedrichstraße, once restricted to Allied military and embassy personnel, foreign visitors, employees of the Federal Republic of Germany’s Permanent Mission, and GDR officials.

After just a few kilometres, you’ll reach the Spree River and the East Side Gallery, the world-famous open-air gallery painted on a remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall. From here, the route follows the Teltow Canal, taking you through the vibrant districts of Neukölln and Schönefeld, blending Berlin’s rich history with its modern urban landscape.

On the southern edge of Berlin, the trail passes through Gropiusstadt to Marienfelde, historically significant as a collection and transit camp for over 1.3 million GDR refugees until 1990. The route then enters a 110-hectare former military area, where the US Army trained in armed urban combat until the early 1990s.

Follow the scenic Teltow Canal and the historic Königsweg towards the former Dreilinden checkpoint, once a key crossing between East and West Berlin. Continue along the shores of Lake Griebnitzsee, returning to Potsdam while enjoying picturesque landscapes and reflections on Germany’s divided past.

Departure from Berlin or spend extra nights in the city or the surrounding region.
