Itinerary

After making your own way to the birthplace of Mozart, welcome yourself in this cultural city by wandering around the backstreets and traditional squares; why not stop at one of the famous coffee shops for a taste of Austrian specialities? It would be impossible not to have an amazing cultural experience in this city.

After a night in Salzburg, begin your cycling adventure southward along the scenic Salzach River. Ride through lush wetland paths to Hallein, a historic Celtic town once thriving from salt mining. Explore its charming old town with winding alleys and elegant facades before continuing towards St. Johann. Along the way, pass the picturesque Golling market town and a striking waterfall, all on well-maintained bike paths. Upon arrival, admire the impressive Pongau Cathedral, marking the end of this scenic stage.

Leaving Schwarzach, you’ll follow the Gasteiner Ache River into the stunning Gastein Valley. Passing through Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, you’ll reach the renowned spa town of Bad Gastein, famous for its waterfall, which has long inspired artists. From Böckstein, a short Tauern lock train ride whisks you across the Alps to Mallnitz. Get back on your bike and enjoy a thrilling descent into the Mölltal Valley, where your next overnight stay awaits.

Kick off the day along the River Möll, passing through gorgeous alpine scenery. Enter the Drautal Valley in the village of Möllbrücke and head for what is known as “the sunny south of Austria”. Enjoy effortless downhill paths by the river Drau. Take a stop in Spittal, where some history awaits you in the “Porcia”, a Renaissance palace (this has been called the most beautiful Renaissance building north of the Alps). Continue on a short distance further to Villach, where you can find multi-coloured buildings and quaint local cafes and pubs.

Take a train ride to Tarvis to bypass the ascent, then enjoy a smooth downhill ride through Italy’s scenic Canal Valley. The well-developed cycle path offers breathtaking views of the Friulian Alps, with untouched nature and dense forests surrounding you. End the day in a charming village at the base of the Julian Alps, where you’ll spend the night.

In Gemona del Friuli, the stunning Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral dominates the skyline. As you cycle towards Udine, vineyards begin to appear along the route, hinting at the region’s rich wine culture. Upon arrival, embrace the dolce vita with a coffee in the piazza or a stroll through the city’s charming streets, admiring its late Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

Cycle through reed-filled landscapes and along scenic water channels towards the Gulf of Venice. Stop in Aquileia, the ancient “Second Rome,” rich in Roman history, before reaching Grado. This charming seaside town boasts a beautiful sandy beach, a historic harbour, and narrow streets lined with cosy restaurants, offering the perfect end to your journey.
