I haven’t cycled seriously for years ....how fit do I need to be?
All our holidays can be enjoyed by anyone who is reasonable fit..........these are leisurely holidays including plenty of time for relaxation and sightseeing. However, if you haven’t cycled for a while, re-acquainting yourself with two wheels before you travel will better prepare you and will add to your enjoyment of the holiday. Do let us know if you have any medical conditions that we should be aware of and check with your doctor if you have any concerns.
I’m concerned about the distances involved.
The maximum distance on any of our cycling tours is 43 miles in one day, which roughly translates to 4.5 hours of actual cycling.........there’s time to stop whenever you please and enjoy the sights and scenery en route, start late or arrive early. Many of our itineraries involve less than 20 miles cycling in one day and all the tours include days when you don’t need to bicycle at all. Of course, if you want to cycle further there’s plenty of scope to extend the routes or to head off independently.
What do I wear for cycling?
Very much dependent on the season but the emphasis is on comfort.... padded cycling shorts and sports vests are a good idea but shorts and t-shirts, or track suit bottoms are fine. Trainers or flat, comfortable shoes are ideal footwear. You’ll also need a windproof layer and, just in case, a waterproof jacket. Hats and gloves are worth packing as mornings can be quite ‘fresh’, especially in the mountains! Dress in layers so you can add or remove clothing according to the conditions.
What else should I bring with me?
Daytime clothes for sightseeing and other activities on non-cycling days, casual evening wear, a warm jumper or fleece, swimwear and swimming towels, sun creams and a sun hat. Please do not bring valuable items for transportation and we ask that you limit your luggage to one medium size suitcase per person.
What happens if I have a problem with my bicycle?
All our bicycles are fully maintained and checked over before you set off, so you are unlikely to have any major problems. Should a serious problem arise – your Freewheel host or local rep will fix it.
