This tour takes you around the south-eastern corner of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean. Some of the island’s most remarkable architecture is to be found in this area – notably in Siracusa and Noto, where ornate Baroque churches, monuments and beautiful piazzas abound.
Our tour starts inland from Catania at Caltagirone, a Baroque town famous for its ceramics. A transfer next day to Piazza Armerina and the celebrated Villa Romana del Casale takes you further inland to enjoy one of the prettiest towns in the interior.
You then cycle south via Vittoria and Modica to the coast and the small port of Pozzallo. Your journey to Siracusa is now along the south eastern coast, passing through Marzamemi, a fishing port with an Arabian atmosphere, Vendicari, a wonderful natural oasis where migrant herons, flamingos, and swans come to nest each year, and the architectural splendour of Noto.
This rewarding tour finishes in Siracusa, one of Sicily’s most enjoyable towns. The staggering beauty of the architecture here is testament to the town’s rich history.
Terrain
Mostly flat with some slightly hilly stretches. The longest hilly section (Vittoria-Modica) is by-passed by the use of the local train. The tour is suitable for people with all levels of cycling experience. Roads are quiet apart from short section when entering Siracusa.
Climate
