Recent anniversaries have focused attention on the courageous efforts of Allied troops in 1944 when the huge D Day landings took place in lower Normandy. Our tour allows you to see some of the historic sites associated with the campaign – Omaha and Juno beaches, and Pegasus Bridge, the landing target of British paratroops at the start of ‘the longest day’.
After two nights in Bayeux – and a visit to see the Tapestry is a ‘must’ - you move east along the coast, and then inland through the typical Norman countryside of the Pays d’Auge. Here you can admire the wooden-framed château of Crèvecoeur, stop at beautiful villages for lunch, and taste the cider and calvados for which this region is famous.
The final two nights are spent in Honfleur, one of France’s most attractive ports, and the subject of countless paintings. You can eat out on the final night at one of the many fine restaurants. Seafood is undoubtedly a speciality.
This is a tour with varied interest. Superb coastline and countryside are the backdrop for the poignant reminders of the D Day campaign. Beautiful towns and architecture are evidence of a rich and more distant past.
